It has to have a modern setting and context. Any ideas?

Sure, consider:

Different ethnicities in pretty much anywhere.

Different religions -say Christian/Muslim

How about a forbidden same-sex story?

You could also do a caste system difference in modern day India.

Well coming out can't be an easy thing, in most eras. Their families could both forbid it and then the two star crossed lovers go through similar motions as the play.
