Light and dark becomes a major motif in this play, especially when it comes to love. Conlider the light imagery when Romeo first sees Juliet at the Capulet party.
"O, she doth teach the torches to burn bright... It seems she hangs upon the cheek of night / Like a rich jewel in an Ethiope's ear"
There are metaphors to Juliet and the rising sun in the darkness, Juliet shining brighter than stars, Romeo being cut out of stars....This imagery becomes a metaphor for passionate love, life, and death.
