act 1 scene 1 Verona a public place
Two Capulet servants – Sampson and Gregory – loiter on the street, waiting for some Montague servants to pass. They banter, using sexual innuendo and raunchy puns to joke about women, and speak with animosity about the Montagues. They lament that the law prohibits fighting, and wonder how to start a battle legally. This scene gives us context to these boys. We see the world in which this play inhabits. These are young men looking for a fight to extend a feud that has been going on for years.
