Here Shakespeare utilizes darkness and light to illustrate Juliet's beauty. Romeo personifies the moon by calling it “sick and pale with grief" and Juliet being much brighter than the sun. Even the stars can't compete with Juliet's radiance. The day/night motif figures prominently in all of Romeo and Juliet's meetings. Shakespeare uses this motif to contrast the opposing forces that plague their ill-fated union.
