Mercutio fights Tybalt over Tybalt's abuse of Romeo. Although violent there is a subtle sense of play to the fight. Romeo tries to break the two up causing Tybalt to inadvertently kill Mercutio with his sword. Mercutio dies condemning both families for their meaningless feud,

"a plague on both your houses"
