Mercutio's speech escalates because he is angry at Romeo. He sees Romeo's love as impetuous, foolish, and insincere. Mercutio is making a point and trying to snap Romeo out of it. During his rant, Mercutio attacks everything he seemingly believes to be a result of desire.... be it love, money, or monetary reward.
