Each play works to define the young characters. Verona is the home of R&J. They operate as extensions of the culture that exists in Verona. If we took R&J out of Verona, the platy would cease to have the same impact and meaning. Romeo states this point when he says, "There is no world for me outside the walls of Verona". Similarly Maria and Tony live within the culture of the Upper West Side neighborhood in New York City. They too are extensions of their culture that provides both security and animosity.
