Shooting an Elephant

When he returns to the office, Orwell hears the other police officers having a discussion about whether or not it was the right thing to kill the elephant. The essay closes with the tellingly racist claim of some of the young officers that it’s wrong to kill such a beautiful creature, just because it killed a Burman.
