What does the situation with the elephant make Orwell realize about the British imperialist mission in Burma?

Orwell realises that imperialism forces individuals to act against their conscience in order to maintain colonial control over natives and native land. He discovers that agents of the imperialist regime take away one's own identity and freedom. Orwell doesn't want to kill the elephant but , as an agent of the colonizer, he must do what is expected of him. Orwell realizes that "when the white man turns tyrant it is his own freedom that he destroys."
