Why was the relationship between Homer and Emily comsidered a "disgrace" and a "bad example to the young people"? What were Homer's intentions?

It was considered disgraceful that Emily would ride around town unescorted with a man who had no intention of marrying her. She flouted convention, which caused damage to her reputation. Homer's intentions were not honorable.
