What made the dog sense danger in the man?

The dog is hesitant to follow this guy from the beginning. THe dog well knows it is dangerous to travel in the such cold. The dog is relieved when they stop and make a fire and warm up, and sense danger when the man puts out the first fire and moves to continue on his journey.
