what is the dying voice which admonished him with whispers lamented softly? why is the dying of this voice significant?

I think the voice represents his old self, his desires, dying as he comes closer to enlightenment. The joys of his own life fade which scares him. There must be a sense of abandonment if he is to let go of his desires. That's my take on the voice.
