Siddhartha is simply the name of the novel's protagonist. It is important to understand that this protagonist is not the Buddha. He was the Siddhartha Gautama. This guy is a man who is living in India roughly the same time as Buddha. I think the name Siddhartha reflects the ideals and struggles of the Buddha through this man. Although I understand that this man and the Buddha are not the same, the meaning of the novel never changed for me. The novel reflects the ideals of the Buddha and Buddhism is simple easy to understand fiction.
