why didn't anybody in Raveloe suspect Godfrey's motives in giving presents to Marner and Eppie?

Nobody suspected his motives, because they all believed he was simply helping out the man who'd taken in an orphan child. They saw his gifts like one would see a reward...... Silas deserved it and Godfrey could afford it.
