How do Arthur's knights first respond to the Green Knight's challenge?

The main problem is that Arthur's knights do not respond to the Green Knight's challenge, leaving King Arthur to step up and accept it himself. Only after Arthur accepts the challenge does Gawain step in, as he will not allow Arthur to be put in such a position.
