what happens there between sir gawain and the green knight?

The Green Knight tells Gawain to prepare to accept the blow he promised, but when he realizes the axe is coming toward him he flinches..... the flinching, of course, gives the Knight a reason to humiliate Gawain and call him a coward. He taunts him, and then he eventually does nothing more than knick his neck with the blade.
