Why do you think the poet sets up the Green Knight--the servant of evil magician Morgan le Fay--as a kind of priest who becomes Gawain's confessor?

I think the otherworldly quality of the Green Knight lends himself well to being a confessor for Gawain. Here the supernatural, magic, and cunning intelligence come together as the ultimate test for an Arthurian knight of Gawain's stature.
