What events and people cause the main character to change?

Carrie is changed by her circumstances. She is unable to earn an adequate salary, afford an apartment of her own, or pay her sister enough in rent. She is later changed by her dependence upon men, who supply her with what she needs to live independently from her sister. After that..... Carrie learns to do what it takes to survive. Good or bad, she takes responsibility and moves on.
