Why is Macon Jr. Afraid of Pilate?

Is it because he's afraid that she will melt his stony heart?

No, I don't think he's afraid of that, although she certainly might be oneof only a few people who could do that....... but what Macon is truly afraid of, far more than anything else, is appearing to be weak. Pilate is his past....... to concede to that past or to admit that he loves her and wishes he had a connection to that past would reflect weakness..... and that's the last thing he would ever allow himself to do.
