What could teaching algebra suggest about the narrator's character? ( Also think about Sonny's interest in music and how this would form a contrast to the narrator's teaching algebra)

In my opinion, the narrator enjoys teaching algebra because the answers can be solved..... unlike many of the problems his students face. Music, however, is a form of self-expression, and our narrator pulls away from emotion.
