Why does Sonny insist on playing the piano? What does it mean to him? What does it mean to the narrator and why?

Sonny likes the piano and he wants to play Jazz. He wants to play like Charlie Parker instead of Louis Armstrong. The narrator is taken aback by this. He doesn't think Sonney can make a living in Jazz.
