What are Walter's faults? Is his character entirely his own fault? What forces have operated to create Morel's shortcomings? What role has Gertrude played? How sympathetic is the narrator to Walter

Walter's greatest fault lies in his alcoholism, which makes him cruel and selfish. Although, they were very much on love, Mrs. Morel disapproved of her husband's drinking and subsequent behavior. His drinking and cruelty also had a negative effect on his relationship with his son.
