Melinda realizes that she feels like a dead tree that can begin to grow if she can begin healing from her rape. The dead branches in her art can be cut away and new ones can grow again. "Those branches were long dead from disease. All plants are like that. By cutting off the damage, you make it possible for the tree to grow again." Melinda understands that keeping silent about the rape only cases her tree death and decay. Talking about it will allow new growth.
