Speak

What is the symbolic and thematic significance of the cartoon about Rudolph, the Red-Nosed Reindeer? (For example, Rudolph's comment about being independent.)

this is the chapter in Speak called, "Winter Break" on page 70 and it is when Melinda almost tells her parents about 'that night'. I'm stuck on this question and even if you could rephrase it so I could understand it better, that would really help.

Rudolph is a throwback to Melinda's childhood where everything was safe and much happier. Melinda contemplates telling her parents what really happened while the cartoon Rudolph is playing in the background. This juxtaposes her safe old life with the dangers of her new life. Can Melinda find the courage to bridge the gap?
