Why would the survivors stay in the airport?

I loved the premise, set-up, pacing, characters and just about everything else. But... why would the airport survivors stay in the airport for one year, let alone twenty years. It makes no sense. Such an easy hole to fix. Why did it go un-fixed?

In my opinion, fear of the pandemic kept them isolated and afraid to move. As a result, the characters created their own little utopia.... a place of safety, learning, and isolation.
