"Sula" by Toni Morrison: Why are Sula and Nel has always been devoted to each other?

I think they balance each other out. The girls discover their other half; they seem to have a symbiotic relationship. Nel comes from an orderly, tidy home; Sula, from disorder and chaos. The two of them are inseparable, each finding something in the other to fill a hole in her own life.
