Sundiata Keita becomes known as the “Lion King” because his name, Sundiata, was based upon the words ‘Sogolon’ and ‘Jata’, which is translated lion. The legend of Sundiata tells us the story of a prince of the indigenous Malinke of the Keita clan. The big cat, or lion, is the clan's symbol.
