What is the speaker describing in the first stanza?

In the first stanza, Dunbar opens with: ‘I know what the caged bird feels’..... meaning the deprivation of freedom. The caged bird feels deprived, just like those who experience racism and injustice... a feeling that leads to him to the protest.
