Madame Defarge represents perhaps the single most vindictive character in the story. Her passion for revenge is bridled by her cunning, but she is not shy about her willingness to kill members of the aristocracy. She enacts this desire by elaborately knitting the names of those who she feels the revolutionaries ought to kill.
