Dr. Manette is rendered a near zombie when he finally leaves La Bastille. He is a broken man who barely recognizes his own daughter anymore. It is her golden locks of hair that helps him realize who he is. He sits in his home going through the motions of cobbling shoes: the only thing that gave his brain something to do besides trying to kill himself. I can't say I would have fared much better in a notorious prison like that. Getting out of their with your mind and body in one piece would have been an accomplishment.
