Lavrenti is Grusha’s brother, who lives in the Northern mountains. Grusha travels to her brother’s house after fleeing Nuka, looking for refuge with her child. Her brother wants to welcome them but his domineering wife is devoutly religious: she doesn’t like fatherless children. Grusha and her child are forced to live in the cold basement.
