In the eighteen-fifties Dickens took a look around him and saw the massive amount of poor people in England. He thought that a similar uprising as the French Revolution might happen in England. He felt the discontent of the poor to be mounting against the very few rich (nobility) that commanded all levels of government in England. If you study the French Revolution, Dickens certainly did his homework. The brutality and slaughter were brought to life.
