Why did Dr. Manette suffer from amnesia after the wedding?

Darnay promised Dr. Manette that he wouldn't tell him about his past until he and Lucie were about to be married. On his wedding day, Charles does just that.... he reveals his true identity. This causes Dr. Manette great stress, and he reverts to the man he was when he was released from prison.
