How did Paul lose his sight. and how did the Fishers deal with the situation?

Paul was blinded when his brother Erik, and Erik's friend Castor held his eyes open and spray-painted them. Paul's parents chose to pretend the event never happened, allowed their oldest son to get away with a horrific and evil act, and pretended Paul's eyes were damaged by an eclipse. In reality, they didn't deal with it at all.
