In the book Tangerine, what mystery was solved my mom by locking her key in the storage unit, and how was it solved?

Mom reveals that Erik has the extra key to the storage bin and discovers the items that have been stolen from the community were in the unit..... Erik and Arthur were responsible for the thefts.
