Paul genuinly fears Erik throughout most of the book. On page 55, he writes about what he would feel like if Erik died. Paul writes, "I would feel relieved. I would feel safer." It is strange that Paul actually would feel safer if his brother died! Most people, like Joey, would be devastated if soemthing became of their brother. Throughout the story, they don't really talk to each other. Paul likes to try his best to avoid Erik. Erik doesn't care about Paul because Paul can't do anything for him. Erik believes that the world exists for him to manipulate people in. He values his parents because they are people that have authority over him, that also worship him. Paul isn't like that do that. Obviously, they aren't very close.
