The sink hole is a natural occurence.... a plague as it's described in the text, like so many others.... muckfires, lightening strikes, termites, ect.
"Y'all are having a regular nine plagues of Egypt over here, aren't you?" I think it could represent Paul's world sinking as his life, and life with his brother, gets more complex.
