Why had Paul’s parents lied to him about the cause of his visual impairment?

Paul's parents have a history of enabling Erik's sociopathic behavior. They think Erik is a f"ootball hero" so they dismiss the obvious signs of Erik's mental instability. Telling Paul the truth would be acknowledging Erik's abhorrent behavior. Paul and Erik's parents are also not good at processing emotional conflict within the family.
