This is actually a pretty detailed question for this short space. Certainly the poverty and the limited potential of the reservation affected Junior. There was nowhere for him to go to on the reserve: nothing but hunger, poverty, and violence. Rearden seemed full of potential but it was a white world and, for much of the novel, Junior felt like an imposter. Junior soon learned about who he was and seemed to feed off both environments to make him a better person.
