Junior feels caught between many dichotomies. He feels trapped between the Indian and the white world; he feels trapped between friends and enemies; he feels caught between the right and wrong side of the river. Many characters represent these conflicts. Rowdy, for example, can be quite racist towards Junior, yet he becomes one of his closest friends.
