On page 56, Junior thinks “Those kids weren’t just white. They were transluscent. I could see the blue veins running through their skin like rivers.” Why does Junior describe them this way? What kind of figurative language is this?

This is a simile meant to describe In this quote, Junior us alluding to the fact that the other students were no different or better than he was...... that he could see right through them.
