Roger becomes a decent guy. Why would this author not keep the white, male, football player "evil" and instead, make him act with integrity?

I think one of the themes in the novel is the idea that people are human and stereotypes not always accurate for Indians or white people. Junior learns that there is goodness in white people if he lets his guard down. There is room for connection once Junior and Roger get to know each other.
