What does Arnold Junior learn in the middle of the novel?

In my opinion, the most important lesson that Junior learns towards the middle of the book is to accept himself for who he is. During his initial time at reardon, he looks down on himself, as a result of the way he is treated by his classmates. He learns that the things he has been ashamed of are actually the things that make him special.
