Why is Rowdy's respect so important to Junior?

Rowdy and Junior have been friends their entire lives.  Junior wants Rowdy to be proud of his change to the white high school, and he wants Rowdy to respect his basketball skills.  Rowdy has often defended Junior when he was bullied on the reservation so Junior wants to maintain their relationship.
