The Granger Fords actually treat Huck quite nicely. They are hospitable to Huck, basically a stranger, yet they have declared war for over thirty years with the Shepherdsons. The men in each family have been committed to killing off the men in the opposing family. No one remembers why the feud started, but several men have been killed each year. Twain seems to be pointing out the silliness and pettiness around "family honour".
