how does Tom treat other people?

In Huck Finn, Tom isn't the best friend in the world. He does help Huck and Jim near the end but his motivations are not completely altruistic. He wants to help Jim because of the adventure of it all. There would have been many better plans for helping Jim escape, but Tom liked the elaborate schemes for adventure. I'm not even convinced that Tom wanted to even help Huck out.
