"Jim is not a free man. He has no education and wants desperately to be with his family. He hence is not "loyal" to his white masters by running away. Jim is portrayed as simple minded. He practices a hybrid of African Voodoo and Christian ideas that the slave culture developed to help them through their ordeals."
