the local color
I'm not totally sure but I'm thinking that you are referring to the setting. Twain put this in the fictional town of St. Petersburg, Missouri; it was supposed to be similar to Twain’s hometown of Hannibal. Local colour is everywhere. The feel of a small town in the Deep South permeates the story. Eccentric towns people like Muff Potter and villains like Injun Jo populate the landscape. There is a sense of laziness, hot summer days and riverside calm. The local language and mannerisms come out as well in the vernacular that the characters use.
