How did the people and tom's friend react about the lost boys before the funeral ?

Most people lamented the loss of the boys. Even Becky Thatcher regretted her harsh words from the days before Tom's disappearance: she breaks down into tears. Tom and Joe meet in the schoolyard and recall font memories of Tom. They argue on who last laid eyes on the boys declaring that Tom was truly a hero.
