How is Tom Sawyer introduced? What do we learn about him in the initial scene?

Tom is introduced while sneaking jam in the jelly cupboard..... he escapes Aunt Polly's wrath, however, by diverting her attention, which allows him the opportunity to escape. We quickly learn that Tom is quick thinking..... sharp, and not opposed to trickery.
